DELIBLATO SANDS (Zagajica hills 256 m)
Deliblato is the largest continental sand terrain in Europe, rich in flora and fauna. I imagined this place with more sand and low vegetation, something like the African savanna. Unfortunately, Deliblato is not any of that. In the deeper layers are sediments of sand and loess and on the surface is just soil. There is a plenty of greenery and forest areas. Zagajica hills (256 m) are the highest point of Deliblato sands. There is a monument at the top, in the shape of a pyramid.
From Belgrade, we drove through Pancevo, Vladimirovac, Banatski Karlovac and Uljma to the village of Susara. It is about 90 km. In Susara, we started our tour at this junction, in the direction of Zagajica (on the left). The final destination is the village of Grebenac.
We walked about 15 km (4-5 hours of moderate walk). The terrain is flat, except the area around Zagajica hills. Unfortunately, the trail is not marked. I thought I will be able to give detailed instructions how to cross this path, but I realized that it is impossible to recognize the right turn on photo. Try to follow the main road and rely on intuition. And on GPS. After Zagajica hills, you will descend into the forest Dumaca. After the forest, you will be on a plateau above the village of Grebenac. Here are the photos:
After the tour, we went to Stara (Banatska) Palanka, which is located on the banks of the Danube. From Stara Palanka, you can see Romania and Ram fortress, near Veliko Gradiste. Everyday, the ferry sails from Stara Palanka to Ram.
This tour is not difficult, it is very interesting. Staying in Europe’s largest sandstone is something that everyone should experience.
