SUVA PLANINA (Pasarelo 1522 m)

Pasarelo is one of the most beautiful and the most interesting peaks of Suva planina (Dry mountain). This peak is located in the area of the village of Beziste, near the town of Bela Palanka. Beziste is about 300 km away from Belgrade. You must drive by the Belgrade – Nis highway, in the direction of Pirot. Turn off at Bela Palanka and continue toward the village of Mokra. From the village of Mokra, drive for another 4 km, to the monastery Divljana, in the village of the same name. This monastery was founded in the 4th century!

About 1 km away from the monastery, in the direction of the village of Divljana, lies an oldest oak at the Balkans. Estimated age is 1029 years! Across this oak, there is another oak, “only” 500 years old!

The road continues through the villages of Divljana, Donja and Gornja Koritnica, to Beziste (10 km). In the village of Beziste, at the place where the sign with the inscription “Rakoš, Pasarelo” stands, turn right. Soon, the asphalt road turns into a very good macadam. Drive to the 7 km far intersection for Rakos spring. This is also the beginning of the trail.

From the crossroad, Rakos spring is 1.5 km far. This is the only source of water at this part of the mountain. Cattle and horses are regular guests. There are over 200 wild horses! Rakos spring is located at the foothill of peak Tresten (1470 m).

From Rakos spring, you should go to the left, into the forest, and follow the “trace” of horses. There are several paths, but you will easily find the right one. This part of the trail is not marked. Just keep the left side. After a 45-minute of walk (3 km), you will reach the main macadam road. There is a rest area called Tri lokve.

From here, Pasarelo (1522 m) is 75 minutes far (3.5 km). Follow the macadam road to the end, and you will see the markings which leads to Pasarelo. On the way to Pasarelo, in the distance you will see the peaks of Litica (1683 m) and Golemo straziste (1714 m).

The view from the top is fantastic! You can see the entire ridge of Trem (1810 m), the highest peak of Suva planina, along with peaks Djordjina cuka (1735 m) and Sokolov kamen (1523 m), as well as the peaks of Tri cuke, Kopren and Midzor, at Stara planina. In the distance, Ruj, Greben and Vlaska mountain can be seen. On the right are the peaks of Divna Gorica (1389 m) and Rzenac (1451 m). A view that can rarely be seen!

Pasarelo is located exactly at the halfway between Constantinople and Rome. That is why this area is also called Catena mundi, ie. “Chains of the world”.

Here is the summary of this tour: a total of 15 km, with 300 m of ascent, lasting 5 hours. This tour is easy and suitable for everyone. You can reach the end of the macadam road by car and climb Pasarelo in 20 minutes. Most mountaineers climb Pasarelo from the children’s resort “Divljana”, but that is a 1000 m of ascent! And that trail is not so attractive. The path we cross is relatively new and unexploited. And it offers beautiful views and encounters with wild horses. This is one of the easiest trails which leads to the one of the most beautiful peaks in Serbia 🙂
