PROKLETIJE (Zla Kolata 2534 m, Dobra Kolata 2528 m)
Zla (Evil) Kolata is the highest peak of Montenegro and it belongs to the phenomenal massif of Prokletije. If you want to climb the highest peak of Montenegro, you must take the following itinerary: Belgrade-Kraljevo-Novi Pazar-Rozaje-Berane-Andrijevica-Plav-Vusanje. It is about 457 km. The ascent starts from the valley Ropojana, from this point:
Length of the marked trail is about 11 km, but you must overcome 1500 meters of altitude difference. It is about 6 hours of walking. But when you see the beauty of this part of Prokletije, you will forget fatigue, pain in your legs, hunger and thirst.
In the first hour, you will walk the forest path. In the forest is a source of a pure mountain water. And now, enjoy the landscapes of Prokletije!
On the half way to the top, at 1810 m, is a plateau called Qafes Borit. Take a break here.
The trail leads near the Ice cave (on the right side of the road), to the next pass at 2039 m. Then you must climb the steep and exposed slopes, to the saddle between Dobra Kolata (Kollata e Mire) and Zla Kolata (Kollata e Keq). At the saddle between these two peaks, turn right toward Zla Kolata, the left one is Dobra (Good) Kolata. Nearby, you will see Ravna (Flat) Kolata (2556 m). You will easily recognize it by a flat, grassy top. Ravna Kolata (Maja e Kollatës) is located in Albania.
The view from the top is fantastic! You can also see the highest peak of Prokletije, Maja e Jezerces (2694 m), in Albania.
The ascent at Dobra Kolata is more demanding than the ascent at Zla Kolata. Although her name does not say it, Dobra (Good) Kolata is not so “good”. You must be very careful during climbing, at some places the track is quite narrow and exposed. However, this can be easily overcome. The view is just as good as from Zla Kolata.
The tour is quite strenuous and it is not for hikers with poor condition. The view from the top is fantastic, landscapes are beautiful, you can feel the freedom and space width. The highest peak of Montenegro is a challenge for every serious mountaineer, and the reward is an incredible feeling that can not be described by words and pictures.
