TARA (Banjska stena 1065 m)

Tara is certainly one of the most beautiful mountains in Serbia. And one of the biggest. Tara has a lot of peaks and lookouts, so you will never be bored. All routes are well marked, there is no chance to go astray.

From Belgrade, the road to Tara goes via Valjevo, Rogacica and Bajina Basta. That is approx. 180 km, or about 3.5 hours of drive. Before you enter Bajina Basta, stop near the sign “Kuća na Drini” and enjoy the view.

In Bajina Basta, follow the signs for Perucac. In Perucac, visit the river Vrelo, which is also called Godina (the Year), because its length is only 365 meters.

After Perucac, turn left, toward Mitrovac. Mitrovac is a well known resort and it is located at 1024 a.s.l. From Mitrovac, drive straight for about 2 km, to the children resort. Here you can park your car and start your tour toward Banjska stena (1065 m). Before you turn to the children resort, you will see a signpost to Banjska stena, that is your starting point.

A completely flat gravel road leads to Banjska stena. The lookout can be also reached by car. The trail is excellently marked and it takes an hour and a half (7 km) to the first lookout. From the road you will turn into the forest, to the first lookout point, it is 5 minutes of walk. From this lookout is a great view at river Drina and the hydroelectric plant Perucac. You will also see Bosnia and its neighboring mountains. At the beginning of the trail, a warning says that you should beware of the bears, but you can also meet something much prettier:

From this viewpoint, continue along the marked trail (in the direction of the sign for Mitrovac – 2h 10 min.). After ten minutes, you will reach Banjska stena. What a breathtaking view!

Do  not go back, just continue forward by the marked path. This circular route (which mainly goes through the woods), ends at Mitrovac, after 2 hours. You will also see another nice viewpoint.

This tour is very easy. After you finish it, you will have a plenty of time (if you are motorized) to see lake Zaovine. From Mitrovac, follow the signs to the lake, it does not matter which side you will choose to start the tour. You must drive around the lake for 40 km, but it is worth every meter!

This tour is perfect for beginners and a good warm-up for experienced hikers. Banjska stena is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Serbia.
