MAJEVICA (Orlovic 523 m)

The starting point of the ascent is monastery Tavna (13th-14th century). The monastery is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. In 1560, it was restored by Starina Novak and his brother Radivoje, who then lived in a cave about 2.5 km from the monastery, which is now called Novak’s cave. From Belgrade, there is about 150 km (2 hours of drive) to the Tavna monastery. The path to the top is circular and very attractive. This is the route: monastery Tavna (200 m) – waterfall Skakavac – Samokres (329 m) – Novak’s cave (350 m) – Donja Krcina (250 m) – cave Suplja stijena (300 m) – Orlovic (523 m) – monastery Tavna (200 m). The trail is about 14 km long, with a 500 m of ascent. The duration of this tour is about 5 hours. The path is marked well, but carry a map with you, because, at some intersections, there are markings which leads in the direction opposite of the one you should go.

The first attraction, waterfall Skakavac, is located about 2 km from the monastery Tavna. A marked path leads to the waterfall.

Waterfall Skakavac

Some 150 m before the waterfall, on the left side begins a path that leads upwards, towards the top of Samokres (329 m) and the most beautiful place on this tour, the Novak`s cave viewpoint. There is less than 1.5 km from the waterfall to the Novak’s cave. Beneath the lookout point are caves where the outlaw Starina Novak used to stay. These caves are accessible and a path, which leads to them, is under the Novak`s cave viewpoint. And from the viewpoint itself, there is a beautiful view at Orlovic and the villages below Majevica.

From the viewpoint, it takes 45 minutes (about 2.5 km) of descend to the asphalt road, in the village of Donja Krcina. On the way to the village, look at the map, because some marked trails intercepts below the viewpoint. From the village, the markings leads you to the turn for Orlovic peak and the cave Suplja stijena (Hollow rock), which is located close to the turn for Orlovic. This is a real cave and you should definitely visit it. The entrance is 20 meters wide and about 5 meters high, and the cave itself is at least 20 meters deep.

Across the turn to Orlovic, there is a small waterfall, which is unusually beautiful in the early spring.

From the waterfall, there is about 2.5 km to the top of Orlovic (523 m). The path to the top has about 250 m of moderate ascent. At the top, there is no lookout point. A little further are meadows that creates a beautiful landscape. From Orlovic, it takes about an hour (3.5 km) to the monastery Tavna, which ends this beautiful and picturesque tour.
